Masks
In Japan a "Kanreki" is a celebration to honor a person's 60th birthday. It marks a metaphoric return to childhood for the honoree. Paper mache is a medium that reminds me of my own childhood, it was used repeatedly at my art summer camp. It was very popular in the Northeast US of the 1970's, and I remember even my mom used it to make this funky leopard that used to sit by the side of our fireplace. It's a messy medium and your hands will get dirty and the house will be a mess but you will get to it later. These paper mache masks are my way of celebrating Kanreki because they were joyous to make.
