This is an important moment in history to be an artist. My newest art is political, because my quiet rage needs to go somewhere.
All art is of it's time and I feel this now more than ever. In the USA , it's terrifying to watch people being stripped of their basic human rights, and even murdered by an evil group of billionaires who want nothing less than to rule the entire world.! There is an epic battle going on right now between good vs. evil.
I often ask myself-why is it always the girls that bear the brunt? We've got he Epstein files, the camp girls killed in a flood on the 4th of July in Texas: with no warning. 170 Iranians killed by bombs, young 7-12 year olds who were just going to begin their week of school lessons. Women being stripped of their rights to make their own decisions about their own lives? Suppression of the women's vote is being debated right now in congress.
I mourn for all the girls and the women. I mourn the girl I was and for the woman I am right now. I want Justice. But I want it to come faster!!
"The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice."said Martin Luther King, Jr.
I try to remember this as we go through a metaphoric dark tunnel of the second DJT presidency. Don't focus on the walls closing in, but on that speck of light in the distance.
There is always hope and I need to remember that. There is still beauty in the darkness and humans can be resilient and kind. WE have to
Making my art is healing, therapeutic , having something tangible made from all the feelings. Its an expression of one woman's life, mine. It mirrors my experiences and hopefully reflects it back on you.
We have one life so I want to make it joyous. Art can be a road into that practice.

This piece is one of 3 small acrylic paintings I did for El Paso's Finest's annual "Fiesta de Frida" . It is one example of my current series called 'bas relief". The surface of the wooden panel is built up with shapes made of polymer clay and then painted using acrylic. This one is titled "Fight the Patriarchy"and is a small study exploring the relationship between Frida Kahlo and her husband, famed muralist Diego Rivera.
